Closing the Loop: Bonipak’s Generational Stewardship in Action
A World Environment Day Reflection from Bonipak
At Bonipak, we’ve always believed that taking care of the land is part of the job. It’s how we’ve farmed for generations; mindful of the resources we use, and thoughtful about what we leave behind.
Over time, we’ve made steady progress toward reducing waste and improving efficiency, from the field to the packing line. Some of these efforts might not be new, but they’re worth remembering—because they reflect why we started down this path in the first place.
Take our solar panels, for example. They’ve been producing clean energy for a while now—enough to cover 84% of our overall energy use. In addition to reducing our reliance on traditional power, they help us cut more than 2,200 metric tons of carbon emissions annually. And while they generate clean energy, they also shield our packing pallets from sun and rain damage—a small but thoughtful way to protect every part of the process.
In the field, we return crop remnants back into the soil after harvest, allowing them to break down naturally. We rotate crops based on what the soil can still offer, planning with the next season in mind. It’s a practice rooted in respect—for the soil, the plants, and the people who rely on them.
When it comes to packaging, we’re continuing to make careful choices. Reusable plastic containers (RPCs) now make up more than 30% of our cartons, and when they’ve run their course, they’re recycled into new ones. For other products, we use sustainably sourced, recyclable cardboard—a simple swap that helps reduce our footprint.
These efforts are part of who we are—and part of something bigger. They reflect a commitment that’s been passed down through generations: to farm responsibly, to care for the land, and to leave things better than we find for the people and seasons still to come.
