Job Title: Payroll Expert (Senior)

Location: Santa Maria, CA

Department: Human Resources

Classification: Non-Exempt

Salary Range: $31-$35

Job Summary

The payroll expert (senior) is primarily responsible for processing payroll and maintaining the employee database. This role will oversees the proper compensation of other employees. They compile information about workers’ salaries and/or the number of hours worked, and they issue paychecks based on that information. Before issuing the checks, they verify their accuracy and make any necessary adjustments. The payroll expert (senior) is a seasoned professional with a variety of technical skill and strong problem solver. They independently perform the full range of responsibilities within the function. This requires deep job knowledge of area typically obtained through higher education combined with experience

Essential Functions

  • Collect and verify timesheet information for all employees/harvest crews.
  • Calculate pay according to hours worked incorporating sick, vacation, etc.
  • Compile payroll data such as hours worked/piecework to calculate gross wages for group or individual harvest.
  • Ability to calculate and explain rest & recover time and overtime premium.
  • Upload and verify CSV import files from time tracking software into the payroll software.
  • Process high-volume weekly payroll.
  • Enter data related to new employee enrollment.
  • Process and update employee direct deposits, federal and state withholding elections.
  • Process employee change from Human Resources Department such as new pay rates, job titles, change in status and hours.
  • Verify pay amounts, hours of work, benefits, deductions, etc.
  • Record and post all payroll registers.
  • Verify check count with timecard count, obtain signatures, package checks, and distribute to employees and crew supervisors.
  • Resolve payroll discrepancies and answer any employee payroll queries.
  • Process payroll operations according to company policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates understanding of the H-2A federal program payroll requirements such as guaranteed rates, tracking hours, corresponding domestic worker status, etc.
  • Communicate with department management, staff members, and outside agencies.
  • Prepare and submit reports with payroll information to supervisor/management.
  • Maintain employee confidence and protects payroll operations by keeping information confidential.
  • Implement payroll policy updates by updating payroll platforms.
  • Innovative and investigates new programs to increase efficiencies.
  • Knowledgeable of health insurance and 401K company programs.
  • Attends leadership/developmental courses.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Process final paychecks.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Required

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree.
  • 5-8 years agriculture payroll experience or 3 years’ experience with degree related to Finance, Human Resource, or Business.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, and as a part of a collaborative team. Ability to prioritize deadlines & projects, including coordinating the efforts of multiple contributors, and establish time frames for completion of projects and assignments.

  • Strong communication skills, written and verbal. Bilingual both Spanish and English. Excellent interpersonal skills, reliable, strong organizational skills. Ability to multitask and prioritize in deadline-driven environment. Strong knowledge of multi-state tax and wage laws. Able to work effectively with minimal supervision

Desired

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Windows operating systems and related business and communication software and a demonstrated ability to learn and use various campus administrative computing systems and applications including, but not limited to Outlook, Pet Tiger, ADP, Excel with the ability to update and expand skills as needed.
